Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, the largest European Coke bottler, has invested in a Netherlands startup to produce food-grade recycled plastic from plastics that normally are sent to a landfill, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The startup, CuRe Technology, cleans and breaks apart plastics into recycled material for reuse in packaging. A study the company sponsored found the process delivers about 65% lower greenhouse gas emissions than oil-based plastic production.

Existing recycled plastic supplies are limited and expensive, preventing companies from using them in packaging.

The Coca-Cola Co. seeks to raise the amount of recycled materials used in packaging from the current 25% to 50% by 2030.

CuRe has sent samples to the Coca-Cola Co. in Atlanta for testing.
